It was called Operation Red Wing, four Heroes from the Elite U.S. Navy S.E.A.L. Team 10, were operating deep in the Afganistan Mountains near the Pakistan border.  The mission was to capture or kill a notorious and key Al Quida Leader deeply entreched in a Taliban stronghold in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan.   when their position was comprimised by a Sheep Herder, they continued and shortly thereafter they came under fire by well over a hundered Taliban fighters.  The numbers suggest possibly as many as 200 or more against our Elite Team of just 4.  Michael Murphy, Matthew Axelson, Danny Dietz and the lone survivor, Marcus Luttrell.

USS Michael Murphy. Designated as DDG 112, the name honors Lt. Michael Murphy who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions during Operation Red Wing, in Afghanistan on June 28, 2005.   “Lt. Michael Murphy’s name which will be forever synonymous with astonishing courage while under fire will now be associated with one of the U.S. Navy’s most technologically advanced, most powerful and most capable warships ever built!  If you have ever had the opportunity of being on a U.S. Navy Combat ship you might be able to understand the honor of having one named after you.  “Every person who hears the officer of the deck announce the arrival of the commanding officer, which is announced in a Loud Speaker “Murphy Arriving” every sailor will hear this virtually everyday as an honored member of USS Michael Murphy.

The USS Michael Murphy is driven by a Gas Turbine, can go in excess of 30 knots, at almost 510 feet long and a crew of 23 Officers and 300 Enlisted, that is amazingly fast.  These amazinf ships can operate as a part of a Carrier Battle Group, Coordinate with Surface and Air Groups, Amphibious Groups, Replenishment Groups, or can very easily operate Independently!

I highly recommend the book “Lone Survivor” by Marcus Luttrell, it tells Lt. Michael Murphy’s courage in great detail, it explains what these amazing men do to become an Elite Warrior known as a U.S. Navy SEAL, their motto “The Only Easy Day Was Yesterday” really rings in true for them!  I salute all Men and Women past and present who have served our great Country!  It is Great Hero’s like this that make our freedom possible!
